A lil’ late, but hey! Stoked to say that my very orange comic/letter to my Korean mum, “Pyeongtaek” has been shortlisted by the Comic Arts Awards of Australia (@ledger_awards)! Thank you so much to the selection committee. It’s a real honour to see my piece alongside the work of others I admire so much.

Man, it feels like an absolute lifetime ago that I made it though. I was still rushing clean up the linework and colour it on the same day I was meant to present it at the first @readtome_ of 2021 - coincidentally the launch of @safdarnama’s incredible and also-shortlisted “Still Alive”, and the first irl one I’d been to since leaving for Korea. After a few days of compulsively drawing in an attempt to make something that could be a full stop at the end of the previous two years (it was unfortunately actually the start of an ellipsis), I ended up turning up to read on about three hours of sleep. But it was a good night. @muftidays, @bernard.caleo, @daily_crispy and @claudinsky read. So did Safdar’s friend Asif, sharing the section of “Still Alive” in which his story features. @patgrantart presented the Graphic Storytellers at Work Report too, which was a ray o sunshine during a particularly shitty day in hotel quarantine. Beers were drunk and good chats were had. It was a great way to get reoriented after getting back, a great memory to have during the lockdown that would follow a few months later, and a great thing to be reminded of now every time I look at Pyeongtaek’s wobbly lines and rushed lettering. Thanks so much for such an intense but gratifying Sunday, @otherworldszinefair. Sweating behind a table while struggling to do basic maths to get people their change, before immediately spending all my money on other folks' stuff, is one of the things I missed the most in the last few years and it was so fucking good to be back at it. Big thanks to everyone who bought and traded with me too. The fundraiser zines raised $200 for Koroot (rounded up slightly, haha) which is also very cool, so double thank you for that 💕

✨Recent things 1: The beginning of a post flood ✨

Along with fantastic images-in-sequence pieces by @safdarnama & @rtwa, and a hybrid piece by @cyalcinkaya, I've got a comic in vol 36, issue 6 of Continuum - Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, compiled and edited with great amounts of blood, sweat and tears (for which I am both very grateful and unenvious) by Dr Daniella Trimboli and A/Prof Michel Eliatamby-O'Brien (@sepiolidae). Based on their research on an archive of multicultural writing held at Deakin uni, the issue focuses on literature in all forms from diasporic creators.

The introduction is free to access, but you’re not affiliated with some sort of nerd institution (no shade - one pays my rent) and can’t see the rest of the issue, the original version of my absolute timewarp of a 2019 comic included in it is in this post. In case you hadn’t worked that out already. The image on the cover is also from a diary comic of mine, which I made at the start of COVID. Remember all that? Oh god.

Anyway, thankyou so much for including my work!

(Also, now having a thing in an academic journal, I’ve reached another milestone of receiving my first ever email from a scam academic publisher, offering to publish an open-access version of a review I’d write for them for the low, low price of 799USD. Which would unfortunately be unbelievably reasonable if the publisher was legit.)

Hey all, feeling very lucky n thankful to have a short comic in @the_comics_journal_ #308 - an issue that focuses on politically committed comics, and how comic artists and communities have responded to ✨these uncertain times✨. It includes a super interesting interview with two civil rights activists responsible for creating graphics and informative minicomics for the first party to receive the "Black Panther Party" moniker, as well as a sweet run-down of the Aus comics scene by @benjuers that includes top folks @silentarmystoreroom, @readtome_ , @safdarnama, his work with @ctyalcinkaya as @hazeenmetal, @glompress, @sticky_institute, @otherworldszinefair and the Graphic Storytellers at Work report, as well as literary mags saving space for images-in-sequence and the usual famous expats.
